The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forestry Service and National Garden Clubs, Incorporated invite first through fifth grade students to participate in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Garden Club poster contest.

The Grand prize winner will win a free trip to Washington, DC for a recognition ceremony. The free trip includes round-trip airfare and accommodations for four. The National Garden Clubs, Incorporated will award a $100.00 Savings Bond to the national first place winner for each grade level category.

"Remember, Only YOU Can prevent Wildfires."



Woodsy Owl's Message, "Lend a Hand-Care for the Land."
This year emphasis is preventing the spread of invasive species.



All poster entries become the property of the USDA Forestry Service. Posters will NOT be returned to contestants. The USDA Forestry Service or National Garden Clubs, Inc. may use the poster artwork for national educational materials and outreach.

Deadline to State Youth Chairman NO later than December 1.

POSTER CONTEST RULES

1. Posters must feature either Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl and their slogan. Must not feature both together.

2. Smokey Bear posters must focus on fire prevention and the message: "Remember Only YOU can Prevent Wildfires."

Woodsy Owl posters should focus on the message,

"Lend a Hand - Care for the Land"
and be based on conservation.

3. The entry posters should encourage children to take a personal role either in preventing wildfires or conserving natural resources.

4. Each entry should be 11 x 17 inches in size

5. Materials that can be used: crayons, markers, poster paints, watercolors, etc.

6. NO three dimensional posters, computer-scanned, or electronically generated images will be accepted!

7 Please print the artist's name, address, home phone number, grade level, school, teacher's name, city, and state and sponsoring Garden Club on the back of the poster in the lower right corner.

8. Do not use dark marker for this as it may show through.

9. Posters are to be completed by individual artists.

10. Contestants may enter only one entry per division of EITHER Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl. Contestant CANNOT enter both.

DIVISIONS

DIVISION I - First Grade
DIVISION II - Second Grade
DIVISION III -Third Grade
DIVISION IV - Fourth Grade
DIVISION V - Fifth Grade

POSTER TIPS

1. A good poster is bold and simple in design.

2. Its message is delivered in both the picture and the slogan.

3. Its message is easily understood.

4. Posters are to be completed by individual student artists. Competition may include students from 1st to 5th grade.

5. Posters will be judged 20 percent each for

originality, design, slogan, artwork, and overall effectiveness of the message.
